ADOLESCENT ADVISORY BOARD
FACTS AT A GLANCE
WHAT
IS THE ADOLESCENT ADVISORY BOARD?
Reaching out to young people with a message of
health that relates to their real life experiences requires both
empathy and humility on the part of an adult educator. The Academy
for Adolescent Health hopes to provide education that teens can
"own" that will make a difference in adolescent behavior.
Our staff wants to listen and learn from young
people; to that end we developed the Advisory Board during the 1999
- 2000 school year. The primary purpose of the Advisory Board is
to provide a forum where teens can openly critique our educational
efforts. The Board reviews curriculum, provides suggestions, creates
teaching activities, and in general gives adults the important gift
of youth perspective.
WHO IS INVITED TO THE ADOLESCENT
ADVISORY BOARD?
We teach in 39 schools in the Washington/Greene
County areas. Four students from each of the twenty school districts
in those counties, as well as the Washington County Alternative
School, are invited to be a part of the Advisory Board.
Students are selected so that the Board is gender
and racially diverse. Our staff enjoys hosting the Advisory Board.
The Board has created numerous learning activities, critiqued adult
created curriculum to provide a young person's perspective, and
developed youth directed brochures on date rape/sexual assault,
peer pressure and tobacco use.
